Irish Times Theatre Awards Best Script Winner
Enda Walsh is a well-known contemporary Irish playwright who has won numerous awards in both theatre and film. His play, 《Same Name, Same Difference》, premiered in 2017 and explores themes of memory, trauma, and self-identity through the dialogue of two women sharing a room. Mei-bo Woo, the Co-Artistic Director of Cheuk Theatre, has previously directed Walsh's works and this time, she directs this play reading, opening up the audience's imagination.
The elderly woman longs to escape her past and rebuild her life, while the younger woman is still filled with anger and confusion. Their conversation is like a soliloquy, fragmented yet repetitive, blurring the lines between past, present, and future. Through their confrontation and imitation of each other, they collectively piece together the contours of their trauma. If trauma is destined to linger for the rest of their lives, is the future an exit or a deeper despair?
